US COVID-19 cases surpass 11M
More states and cities are enforcing new restrictions to curb the spread of COVID-19 as the number of reported cases across the US surpassed 11 million on Sunday, just six days after the country hit 10 million infections. The US logged 166,555 new cases and 1,266 deaths on Saturday alone; the number of Americans hospitalized with COVID-19 reached more than 69,400, the highest number yet; and at least 45 states reported a higher number of cases last week than the previous week. US could see 8M more COVID-19 cases before inauguration

Moderna reports 94.5% efficacy for COVID-19 vaccine
Moderna today reported that its investigational COVID-19 vaccine was 94.5% effective at preventing disease, according to an interim analysis of a 30,000-person clinical trial. Half of participants received the vaccine and half were given a placebo, and 90 of the 95 COVID-19 cases documented so far have been in the placebo group.

Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, mental health-related emergency department visits have increased 24% for children 5 to 11 years old -- compared with the prior year -- and 31% among those 12 to 17, according to data published in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. Nisha Sachdev, senior associate at the Center for Health and Health Care in Schools, suggests that schools consider whether their strategies to support students' mental health will be effective via online contact or physically distant in-person learning.
